What you need to know about WEEE

Othello supports WEEE Recycling and Disposal

WEEE Regulations

The WEEE Directive (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) is now law in the UK. This legislation aims to make the collection, treatment, recovery and destruction of waste electrical equipment part of the initial price you as "consumer" pays, by forcing producers/distributors/suppliers of electrical equipment (including internet retailers) to accept the return of equipment for disposal/recycling.

According to government guestimates, the amount of WEEE is increasing by ~5% per year.

Much of the UK's waste simply ends up in landfill (standard government dumping of your refuse for the last 30 years) which can lead to toxins contaminating soil and water.
This can have a harmful effect on natural habitat, wildlife and also human health in the areas around landfill sites.
The long term aim is to stop landfill and sell the existing sites as cheap housing/commercial space, so the ground being "toxic" is an issue ...

Because some electrical items thrown away can be repaired or recycled, the WEEE Directive states that Distributors of new Electric and Electronic Equipment (DofEEE) have to reduce the amount of WEEE going into landfill sites.

Othello is obliged under these regulations to offer our customers free take-back of their WEEE on a like-for-like basis when they buy a new Electrical or Electronic product from us.

For example, if a customer bought a new server on rent-to-own from us we would accept their old collocated or rent-to-own server and prevent it going into a landfill site by arranging the recycling and disposal of it safely.

Customers must return their WEEE item to us within 28 days of starting the contract on their new item, and tell us at time of order what they will be sending an item for WEEE disposal

WEEE Regulations state that all new electrical goods should now be marked with the crossed-out wheelie bin symbol to show that they were produced after 13th August 2005. Items with this icon MUST not be put with normal household waste.

Othello are also able to arrange professional collection and WEEE destruction for any other Business computer equipment our clients wish to dispose of - old computers, screens, servers, desktops, mobile phones, pbx, scanners, printers etc - many of these items contain lead, mercury, fluoro-carbon, sodium etc which are all poisonous and need to be handled carefully, and recycled where possible.
